Our story

Built from the inside out.

Paws 4 Change wasn't born in a boardroom or a clinical setting. It started with a conversation, a lifetime of lived experience, and a burning question: what if the thing that helped me could help everyone?

"I didn't set out to build a movement. I just heard about something that had changed people's lives — and I couldn't stop thinking about why more people didn't know about it."

— Sue Cooper, Founder

How it began

A conversation that changed everything.

In 2023, Sue Cooper was working as a digital marketer — building brands, running campaigns, understanding how ideas spread. She was good at it. But something was missing.

Then a friend told her about the WAGS the Dog program — an evidence-based canine-assisted learning initiative that had been quietly transforming lives across New South Wales. The outcomes were remarkable. The methodology was grounded. And almost nobody outside a small circle had heard of it.

For Sue, the conversation landed differently than it might have for someone else. As a neurodivergent person and parent of a neurodivergent child, she had spent years navigating a world that wasn't designed for the way her mind worked — and watching her child do the same. She knew firsthand the weight of that experience. The self-doubt. The negative self-talk. The exhausting effort of trying to fit a shape that was never meant for you.

2023
Paws 4 Change is founded. Sue acquires the licence to deliver the WAGS methodology and begins building the infrastructure to take it further — into schools, homes, workplaces, and eventually into the hands of other facilitators across Australia.

What drew her in wasn't just the data — though the data was compelling. It was the why behind the numbers. Canine-assisted learning works because dogs don't judge. They don't have expectations. They respond to who you are in the moment, not who you've been told you should be. For neurodivergent people in particular, that unconditional presence is genuinely transformative.

Sue brought everything she had to building Paws 4 Change: her marketing expertise to give the program the visibility it deserved, her lived experience to ensure it was designed with genuine empathy, and her belief — tested and proven in her own life — that the right environment changes everything.

The foundation

Built on a decade of proof.

Paws 4 Change is built on the methodology of the WAGS the Dog program — one of Australia's most rigorously tested canine-assisted learning frameworks, developed and refined over more than a decade of real-world delivery.

When Sue founded Paws 4 Change, she didn't start from scratch. She started from a foundation of evidence — hundreds of participants, carefully measured outcomes, and a structured methodology proven to work across a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and needs.

That legacy matters. It means every Paws 4 Change session — and every facilitator we train — is grounded in something real, not something invented. When families trust us with the people they love most, they deserve more than good intentions. They deserve proof.

What we stand for

The beliefs that drive everything we do.

Our mission

To make evidence-based canine-assisted learning accessible to every person who needs it — and to build a network of passionate facilitators who can deliver it in every corner of Australia.

We believe that the right environment — warm, non-judgmental, and dog-led — unlocks growth that traditional approaches simply can't reach.

Evidence over intuition

We don't ask you to take our word for it. Every program we deliver and every facilitator we train is grounded in measurable, peer-reviewed outcomes.

Lived experience matters

Our system was built by someone who has navigated neurodivergence personally and as a parent. That shapes every decision we make — from program design to how we talk to families.

Access without barriers

No referral. No diagnosis. No long waiting lists. Designed to be as easy to access as possible for the people who need it most.

The dogs come first

Every dog in our program is assessed, prepared, and genuinely loved. Welfare isn't a checkbox — it's a core part of how we operate.

Neurodivergence & Paws 4 Change

Designed by someone who gets it. Really gets it.

Neurodivergent people — whether ADHD, autistic, dyslexic, or otherwise wired differently — often carry an invisible weight: the belief that something is fundamentally wrong with them. That weight accumulates over years of being misunderstood, overlooked, or asked to fit into systems that were never built for them.

Sue knows that experience from the inside. And the canine-assisted learning program didn't just help the families and participants she worked with — it helped her. The non-judgmental presence of dogs, the structured but gentle approach to emotional regulation, the gradual rebuilding of self-trust — these aren't abstract benefits for Sue. They're personal ones.

That's why Paws 4 Change is designed with neurodivergent participants at the centre — not as a special consideration, but as a core design principle. A program that works for the most complex needs works for everyone.

Sue's experience:

"This program helped me understand myself better — and quietly, gently, remove the negative judgement I'd carried about myself for most of my life. If it did that for me, I knew it could do it for others."
