Veterans and First Responders

Restoring Calm, Connection & Confidence… One Paw at a Time

Serving others takes heart. But after years of putting others first, it’s easy to lose connection with your own well-being.

Whether it’s the weight of trauma, the fatigue of burnout or the quiet undercurrent of anxiety… you are not alone and support is here.

At Paws 4 Change, our Veterans and First Responders program offers gentle, non-clinical support for those who’ve served on the frontlines… military personnel, emergency workers, paramedics, firefighters, police and beyond.

With the support of our certified facilitators and emotional support dogs, participants are guided through practical tools to reduce stress, reconnect with themselves and rebuild emotional strength… in a way that feels safe, natural and grounded.

Who This Program Is For

🐾 Veterans and ex-serving defence force members

🐾 Paramedics, firefighters, police officers, corrections officers

🐾 SES volunteers and frontline workers

🐾 Retired or transitioning first responders

🐾 NDIS participants with service-related PTSD or mental health conditions

🐾 Carers and family members also seeking emotional support

If you’ve carried too much, for too long… this space is for you.

What the Program Offers

Our program is calm, confidential and trauma-aware. Sessions focus on:

✨ Emotional regulation and nervous system reset

✨ Mindfulness-based stress reduction

✨ Rebuilding self-confidence and emotional safety

✨ Reducing anxiety and overwhelm

✨ Connection through non-verbal support (with dogs)

✨ Gentle structure and skill-building for daily wellbeing

This is not talk therapy. You don’t have to rehash trauma or tell your story unless you want to. Our dogs do a lot of the heavy lifting… creating calm, safety and connection simply through their presence.

Why Dogs?

Our emotional support dogs help co-regulate the nervous system, offering:

✅ Comfort without words or judgement

✅ Calm for hypervigilance or emotional shutdown

✅ A bridge for trust, especially when human connection feels hard

✅ A safe anchor for grounding in the moment

✅ Emotional safety that allows for self-reflection and growth

They don’t need to know your story to sit beside you and say, “You’re safe here”.

FAQs

Q: Do I need a diagnosis or referral?

No diagnosis is needed to access the program privately. If using NDIS, we’ll help you align the program with your plan goals.

Q: Is this clinical therapy?

No. This is a non-clinical, therapeutic-style program. It’s emotional education, not counselling… and many people prefer this gentle, hands-on approach.

Q: Can I just come for the dog?

Yes… and many do. The presence of the dog alone can have powerful effects on regulation, connection and emotional processing.

Q: Is it okay if I don’t want to talk?

Absolutely. Silence is welcome. Everything we offer is optional, low-pressure and paced to your needs.
